Vertical Blinds

FEATURES

Vertical blinds are a modern option, the plain vinyl type is the most economical option to this day in the wide array of options available. For a little more money, you can give your home a luxurious touch. Vertical blinds offer superb light control because of the ability to tilt the vertical slats or vanes that the blind track or headrail operates. They are easy to clean if they are smooth, and available in many textures, patterns and colors. I short, they can be an affordable, modern or contemporary blind solution.

IDEAL USES AND CONS

Sliding glass doors are an ideal place for vertical blinds, up to 94 inches. Oversized windows are another place where vertical blinds make sense, up to a limit, over 94 inches for sliding doors is not recommended due to the weight of the slats. A few reasons vertical blinds are not ideal are: stacking, weight, and practicality. Stacking refers to the “staking width or height” of the blind when it is completely in the open position. The weight of the blind refers to the weight of the slats or vanes that hinder the operability of the blind. And, practicality of the “operation” of the blind refers to the use in the operation of the blind in the opening where the blind is installed. One example is sliding doors. Even if the weight constraint is taken into account, if a vertical blind is employed to cover a sliding door opening, the high “traffic” of such an opening makes it less optimal in its function because of the greater traffic through such a high transit area, since most people do not open the blind to go through the door thereby causing the wind to stir the blinds and make the veins get caught in the operation of the door. Also, if the windows are kept open the wind will also stir the slats or vanes and could cause them to get out of alignment causing damage to the blind.

VALANCE OPTIONS

There is usually a three-and-a-half-inch valance or headrail used to cover the rail or track of a vertical blind. Additionally, upholstered valances can be used to accent the window and give a more elegant appeal.

When considering your budget, vertical blinds are usually the answer. Vertical blinds today are made of plastic/vinyl (PVC). The most economical type is the plain PVC blinds, although there are a wide variety of textures, materials, and colors available. Years ago, fabric vertical blinds were also popular, but today PVC blinds have become predominant because of modern manufacture techniques that allow fabric textures, patterns, and colors to be replicated in the vinyl. The light filtering properties of fabric are not possible in the vinyl vanes or slats, but that is not an important factor since the blinds can be rotated to let in light and direct it in the direction desired.
